Biomedical research to become the pre-dominant science of the 21st century

We've just come across this juicy statement in the European Medical Research Council's White Paper II:

"Because of it's impact on society, biomedical research in particular is poised to become the pre-dominant science of the 21st century. However, this will only happen if it interacts successfully with three key areas...: society, in which it is anchored and for whom it can help solve ‘grand challenges’; Europe, as its nurturing ground of scientific excellence; and the world, which will offer both competition and collaboration."
